Prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office will discuss the types of crimes that Asian-Americans are often victims of, including anti-Asian hate crimes, elder abuse and financial fraud crimes. The speakers will discuss the nuts and bolts of prosecuting an anti-Asian hate crime case and the challenges of proving motive, building trust in the Asian-American community, and encouraging reporting. The speakers will also discuss the types of crimes that the elderly and/or immigrant population within the Asian-American community fall prey to and the cultural competencies required to successfully prosecute elder abuse or financial fraud cases.

Discussion will also highlight the challenges and importance of building alignment between the prosecutor’s office and the police with regards to crimes against Asian-Americans, and how an effective law enforcement response to these crimes is critical to community safety.

Finally, the speakers will discuss the importance of approaching these cases with a multi-faceted, victim-centric approach and ways that DA’s offices can go further in engaging with and educating the public, and providing support to victims.
